Iram). |
An ancient tribe to whom the prophet Hūd (q.v.; q 7:65; 11:50; cf. 46:21) was sent. They are mentioned twenty-four times in the Qurʾān.
The ʿĀd are described as a powerful tribe which existed after the people of Noah (q.v.; q 7:69). They were mighty and proud of their strength (q 41:15; cf. 26:128-9) as well as very tall of stature (q 7:69). The prophet Hūd was sent to the ʿĀd, but his preaching was largely unsuccessful (q 7:70-1; 11:53-4; 46:22). Other messengers were also sent to the ʿĀd, but they too were rejected (q 26:123). Hūd tried to convince his people to invoke God’s intervention after a period of drought (q 11:52) and God punished them. The ʿĀd were devastated by a violent wind (q 41:16; 46:24; 51:41; 54:19; 69:6; see air and wind), «the chastisement of a dreadful day» (q 26:135), which blasted for a week (q 69:7) and left only their dwelling-places standing (q 46:25). Only those who believed Hūd were saved (q 7:72; 11:58; 26:139). Some other references are unclear. It is said that God caused the death of the «first ʿĀd» (q 53:50). The ʿĀd were summoned to faith in a place called al-Aḥqāf (q 46:21). Another verse connects the ʿĀd with the mysterious Iram Dhāt al-ʿImād (q 89:6-7; see iram). In other verses the ʿĀd are briefly mentioned with Noah (q.v.), the Thamūd (q.v.) and others (q 9:70; 14:9; 22:42; 29:38; 38:12; 40:31; 50:13). Frequent references in pre-Islamic poetry show that legends about the tribe of ʿĀd were well known among Arabs before the time of the Prophet (Horovitz, ku, 126-7) and the qurʾānic versions of these stories apparently belong to this cycle of genuinely Arabian traditions. Qurʾānic exegesis and works on the early prophets created a complete and coherent narrative of the vicissitudes of the ʿĀd, adding many remarkable details (see punishment ¶ stories). According to differing interpretations, Iram was either the name of a place associated with the ʿĀd or the name of the most representative subtribe of the ʿĀd. The ʿĀd were originally a nation of ten or thirteen subtribes and one of the first Arab tribes. Al-Aḥqāf, which literally means "the sand dunes, " was identified as a place called al-Shiḥr, located between Oman and Hadramawt. An utterance attributed to Muḥammad specifies that the wind which killed the ʿĀdites was a western one. The ʿĀd were giants between ten and five hundred cubits in height and on one occasion they sent a delegation to Mecca to ask for rain. Stories are told about the tribe’s legendary eponym ʿĀd and his powerful sons Shaddād and Shadīd. According to some reports, the sage Luqmān (q.v.) belonged to the ʿĀd. The surviving ʿĀdites sought refuge in Mecca according to some stories while others place them in the mythical towns of Jābalqā and Jābarsā. |

также hūd, iram dhāt al-'imād, luḳmān, shaddād b. 'ād.]
Аравия; это напоминает колодец Ирама в Ḥisma (al-Hamdānī, Ṣifa, 126; A. Sprenger, Die alte Geogr. Arabiens, § 207, A. Musil, Arabia Petraea, ii / 2, 128). |
ʿĀd, an ancient tribe, frequently mentioned in the Ḳurʾān. Its history is related only in sporadic allusions. It was a mighty nation that lived immediately after the time of Noah, and became haughty on account of its great prosperity (vii, 69; xli, 15). The edifices of the ʿĀdites are spoken of in xxvi, 128 f.; cf. in lxxxix, 6-7 the expression: «ʿĀd, Iram of the pillars» [see iram d̲h̲āt al-ʿimād ]. According to xlvi, 21, the ʿĀdites inhabited al-Aḥḳāf [q.v.], the sand dunes. The prophet sent to them, their «brother» Hūd [q.v.], was treated by them just as Muḥammad was later treated by the Meccans, and on account of that they were, with the exception of Hūd and a few pious men, swept away by a violent storm (vii, 65 ff.; xl, 58; xli, 16; liv, 19; lxix, 6). Finally, in xi, 52, there is mention of a drought from which they suffered. From these indications the later legends of the ḳiṣaṣ al-anbiyāʾ ¶ wove their coherent narratives. [For these, cf. also hūd, iram d̲h̲āt al-ʿimād, luḳmān, s̲h̲addād b. ʿād .]
It cannot be shown with certainty what more ancient traditions are at the base of the Ḳurʾānic story. The old poets knew ʿĀd as an ancient nation that had perished (e.g. Ṭarafa, i, 8; al-Mufaḍḍaliyyāt, viii, 40; Ibn His̲h̲ām, i, 468; cf. Zuhayr, xx, 12 and luḳmān); hence the expression: «since the time of ʿĀd», Ḥamāsa (Freytag), 195, 341. Their kings are mentioned in the Dīwān of the Hud̲h̲aylites, lxxx, 6, and their prudence in that of Nābig̲h̲a, xxv, 4. The mention of the ʿAdite Aḥmar by Zuhayr, Muʿallaḳa, verse 32, and in the Dīwān of the Hud̲h̲aylites, p. 31, merits consideration, as the Muslim legend connects (Ḳudār) al-Aḥmar with T̲h̲amūd [q.v.]. Whether there really existed, and where, a nation called ʿĀd, is still an unanswered question. The genealogies of the Arabs relating to the ʿĀdites are naturally valueless, just as is their locating of that people in the large and uninhabitable sandy desert between ʿUmān and Ḥaḍramawt. The identification of Iram with Aram, adopted by the Arabs and several modern scholars, is not at all likely. Of the latter, Loth has identified ʿĀd with the wellknown tribe of Iyād; on the other hand Sprenger sought for ʿĀd in the Oadites, who according to Ptolemy lived in N.-W. Arabia; this recalls the well of Iram in Ḥisma (al-Hamdānī, Ṣifa , 126; A. Sprenger, Die alte Geogr. Arabiens , § 207; A. Musil, Arabia Petraea, ii/2, 128). The excavation of the second-century Nabataean temple at Ḏj̲abal Ramm, about twenty-five miles due east of ʿAḳaba, brought to light Nabataean inscriptions giving the name of the place as ʾ rm; Savignac, very plausibly, connected this with Iram. Cf. H. W. Glidden, in BASOR, no. 73, 1939, 13 ff.; Ramm would also be identical with al-Hamdānī’s Iram and Ptolemy’s Aramaua. But Wellhausen pointed out that instead of the expression «since the time of ʿĀd» the expression min al-ʿād also occurs; therefore he supposed that originally ʿĀd was a common noun («the ancient time»; adj. ʿādī , «very ancient») and that the mythical nation arose from a misinterpretation of that expression. |
