The main source of this story is unknown to this day, and there are differing accounts in Islamic sources as to where the events occurred. According to Goldziher and Landberg (p. 17), the story is set in Ḥaḍramawt, while Hartmann (p. 25) suggests Aleppo. Initially the protagonist was anonymous, and it was towards the end of the 4th/10th century that he began to be called Barṣīṣā. Elements of the story seem to have direct parallels with St. Anthony of Egypt (251—355 or 356), whose many years in seclusion in the desert and in caves involved epic ordeals with the devil, who appeared to him in various guises, including that of a temptress and an austere monk (see Cross and Livingstone, ed., 2/1053). However, while St. Anthony manages to resist the devil’s machinations by resorting to intense prayer, fasting and ascetic practices, Barṣīṣā succumbs and suffers eternal damnation.

Different versions of this story are cited in most commentaries on these verses and in ḥadīth compilations, with such personages as ʿAlī b. The four reports that al-Ṭabarī narrates in his commentary on the word insān (‘man’) in verses 16 and 17 of Sūrat al-Ḥashr refer to a solitary hermit, either from the Jewish tradition or a Christian priest (12/33-34), who devotes himself entirely to <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">¶ </del>God in a remote monastery over a lengthy period of sixty, seventy or three hundred years. Through these ascetic practices he becomes one whose prayers and petitions are answered, he is able to behold the divine Throne, and see beneath the surface of the earth. Enraged by this monk’s devotion and scrupulousness, the devil seeks for years to lead him astray, but his stratagems and temptations have no effect on Barṣīṣā’s resolve (see al-ʿAwfī, 3(2)/522-525; Maybudī, 10/52).

The unfortunate fate of this ascetic monk is more or less the same in all versions of the story. The four reports that al-Ṭabarī narrates in his commentary on the word insān (‘man’) in verses 16 and 17 of Sūrat al-Ḥashr refer to a solitary hermit, either from the Jewish tradition or a Christian priest (12/33-34), who devotes himself entirely to <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">¶461/2 </ins>God in a remote monastery over a lengthy period of sixty, seventy or three hundred years. The devil initially appears to Barṣīṣā in the form of a radiant and devout person whom Barṣīṣā sees as superior to himself. He teaches Barṣīṣā some special prayers to heal the sick, and, in one version, admonishes him for not using the gift of having his prayers answered in the service of others. The devil then afflicts a beautiful girl (either a shepherdess or Jewish princess) with some sickness or madness, and inculcates in the minds of her immediate family that only the monk can cure her of her affliction. Her three brothers take her to Barṣīṣā but he refuses to treat her; they insist and he finally gives in to their pleas. The devil then jumps at the opportunity and tempts the monk to seek sensual gratification, telling him that the doors of repentance will always remain open. Barṣīṣā finally succumbs to his base passions and commits fornication. At the instigation of the devil, to cover up his shameful act, Barṣīṣā kills her and buries her beside a tree.

The remainder of the story appears in differing versions and features various plots and schemes instigated by the devil. In their Die Legende vom Mönch Barṣîṣâ, Goldziher and Landberg explain the origin and development of the tale with reference to the works of al-Qazwīnī, al-Ibshīhī (Abshīhī), al-Suyūṭī and Sheykh-zāda’s Turkish story, Forty Vezirs, which includes a section on Barṣīṣā entitled ‘The Lady’s Eleventh Story’ (Sheykh-zāda, 138—143). The version of the Barṣīṣā story in the Forty Vezirs, which stresses how easily good can be nullified by satanic suggestion, seems to have arrived in England towards the end of the 18th century, and became the inspiration behind Matthew Lewis’s 1796 three-volume Gothic novel The Monk. In this reworking of the tale, the much-esteemed abbot of a monastery in Madrid is overcome by love for a young novice who turns out to be a woman in disguise: in order to gratify his lust he breaks his monastic vows and later unknowingly commits incest and murder in pursuit of his passions, and sells his soul to Lucifer in an attempt to escape his fate at the hands of the Inquisition. The story not only depicts the fall of an apparently virtuous man when confronted by desires of the flesh, but is also a fierce critique of hypocrisy within the Christian Church. Like the tale of Barṣīṣā, it ends with the protagonist’s realisation in death that it was all the devil’s doing, resulting from his own hidden hypocrisy, pride and idolatry (see Lewis, 349—352; for a description of the various sources, see Macdonald, 1/668).

The Barṣīṣā story has been the subject of analysis by European scholars such as Goldziher, Landberg and Macdonald. The theme of an ascetic monk brought down by longing for an Alexandrian courtesan was also treated in Anatole France’s 1890 novel, Thaïs, which was adapted by Louis Gallet as a libretto for Jules Massenet’s 1894 eponymous Comédie lyrique (for the story’s European provenance via the 10th-century Abbess Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim, see Milnes, 4/706-708). Shared themes include a seemingly respectable protagonist whose insatiable pride and longing for knowledge is his undoing, the pact with the devil (Mephistopheles), lust for a beautiful woman, the descent into eternal damnation, and above all, perhaps, the abiding concern with good and evil and their consequences.

The tale of Barṣīṣā may also have had some indirect influence on other European literature: for example, it bears some similarity to the Faust legends that became well-known in Europe through the writings of Christopher Marlowe (d. 1593), whose play Doctor Faustus was first published in 1604, and later of the poet Johann Wolfgang von <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">¶463/1 </ins>Goethe (1749—1832), whose two-part tragedy Faust became one of the great masterpieces of German literature, and subsequently a favourite of the opera stage when adapted for Charles Gounod’s 1859 grand opera Faust and Arrigo Boito’s 1868 opera Mefistofele. <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">(</ins>{{аль-Багави|59|16|}}<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">)</ins>.

</ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;"></ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;"></ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;"></ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;"></ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;"></ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;"></ins>

</ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;"></ins>

</ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;"></ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;"></ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;"></ins>
